Early Years Groups
We offer a variety of sessions that are adaptable to suit a wide range of groups, including reception classes, pre-schools, childminders, and home education groups.
Each session uses play, storytelling, and creativity to support early years learning. With the guidance of the museum team and support from accompanying adults, children are encouraged to explore new ideas through imaginative, hands-on activities.
We have a variety of topics available and every booking includes access to our Herbert Norris Museum Pre-Visit Pack (subject to availability), containing child-friendly resources and engaging activities to help prepare for visiting. The pack introduces the museum environment, encourages discussion about what museums are, and helps children feel confident and excited about their visit.
Each topic includes:
– A welcoming introductory activity with the session leader
– Time to explore the museum (independently or in small groups)
– A range of fun and engaging activities relating to the session theme
– Simple craft activities to make and take home
– A reflective group circle to share what they’ve learned and enjoyed
Fantastic Jurassic
Join Harry and his Bucketful of Dinosaurs for dino-themed fun! Includes fossil digging with rubber chippings, dinosaur games, and salt-dough fossil making.
Bertie the Bull’s Great Escape
Discover the local tale of Bertie the bull’s escape from the Victorian bullock market and explore the different animals that have called St Ives their home.
Teddy Bears’ Picnic
Bring your bears for a pretend picnic featuring some of the museum’s very old bears, bear stories, crafts, and have a go at making play dough food!
The Three Little Pigs Move to St Ives
Where will the pigs build their homes? Explore materials and local adventures in this imaginative twist on a classic tale.
Beside the Riverside
This session celebrates river wildlife with songs and activities connected to frogs, ducks and more – and plenty of wet water fun!
The Museum Needs You!
Take on important museum jobs – patrol the gallery, transport artefacts, and help keep the museum tidy in this playful behind-the-scenes adventure.

– Due to high demand, we recommend booking at least two months in advance
– These sessions typically make use of the museum’s garden and are best suited for bookings between May and September – bookings in colder months may still be possible, depending on group size and session requirements
